Kay Ritter lives in Rhode Island where she has been a working artist for more than thirty years. She studied sculpture at The Rhode Island School of Design but as a painter is primarily self taught. The early part of her career was spent constructing whimsical three dimensional figures which are now in collections throughout the United States and Europe. A large group of these characters is in the permanent collection of The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

A change in direction occurred in the mid 90's and she began painting still life with a classical approach and careful observation of arranged objects. Subject matter now includes interior scenes and landscape with implied narratives and a touch of humor that harkens back to past figurative work.

A deep connection to the natural world is apparent in her paintings. An avid gardener, she is featured in “The Inspired Garden, Twenty Four Artists Share their Vision” by Judy Paolini and Nance Trueworthy published by Down East Press.

Her paintings have been exhibited at The Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, The Arnot Art Museum, The Allentown Art Museum, and The Newport Art Museum. Permanent collections include The Colby College Museum of Art and many private collections in the United States and Europe.
